Newport County's junior team, Sifil AFC Blues, has achieved an incredible turnaround by becoming league champions. The team was on the verge of folding in 2023 due to a lack of players, but one parent, Matt Chalmers, refused to let the team disappear. With no prior coaching experience, Mr. Chalmers took charge, determined to keep the boys, many of whom had played together since the age of six, united. The 2023/24 season was a struggle, with the team often on the receiving end of heavy defeats, but the players battled on. Their perseverance saw them through to the 2024/25 season, which began with seven consecutive losses. Gradually, however, the team began to rebuild, with new players joining and Leigh Coulson stepping in to assist Mr. Chalmers. By the end of the season, the Blues had won eight of their final 12 matches, securing a mid-table finish and a spot in Division 2. A standout moment came at a summer tournament in Hirwaun, where they triumphed in the final to claim their first-ever trophy. This success carried into the 2025/26 season, with the Blues winning their opening seven league matches. Adverse weather conditions disrupted the winter season, but the team remained unbeaten, although stuck in mid-table due to a fixture backlog. As spring approached, the league announced that any matches not completed by the end of May would not count, presenting a challenge for the Blues, who still had several games in hand. With no room for error, they managed to piece together a decisive run of victories, setting the stage for a dramatic final day face-off with Undy AFC. The Blues entered the match three points clear, but with the threat of a title-deciding play-off looming in the event of a defeat. Undy AFC drew first blood, but the Blues, boasting the league's best defensive record, responded under pressure. Lennon Jones equalised with a powerful header, before Kailen King-Strickland fired them ahead with less than 10 minutes to go. Lennon then sealed the win late on, securing a 3–1 victory and the league title. From a team on the brink of folding, to league champions, the Sifil AFC Blues' journey is a testament to the power of resilience and community spirit.
