Newport County secured their first win since the opening day of the season with a 2-1 victory over Grimsby Town at Rodney Parade. The result ended a five-match winless run in League Two and moved the Exiles up to 17th place in the table with nine points from eight games.
Christian Doidge opened the scoring in the 57th minute, finishing from the edge of the box after a pass from Cameron Norman. Shaquille Gwengwe doubled the lead twelve minutes later, heading home from close range following a corner.
Grimsby, who had been unbeaten in the league before the match, pulled a goal back late on. A cross from substitute Justin Amaluzor was turned into his own net by Newport goalkeeper Jordan Wright with seven minutes remaining. The visitors had missed a clear chance in the first half through striker Iwan Morgan.
Grimsby manager David Artell made one enforced change to his starting lineup. "The only change David Artell made to his team from the last league game was an enforced one," he said, with Jamie Walker replacing the absent Geza David Turi.
The win was Newport's first over Grimsby since February 2021 and halted the Mariners' unbeaten start to the campaign.
Newport County now prepare for an away trip to face Gillingham, who are currently eighth, on Saturday 3 October.

On Tuesday, manager Graham Coughlan said his side's confidence is growing. "We're on a good run and the belief is there," Coughlan told The League Paper. The Exiles have now won two consecutive matches, following their 2-1 win over Grimsby with a 2-0 victory at Swindon Town on September 22. The club sits 17th in League Two with nine points from eight games.
