Northampton Town have secured the services of 25‑year‑old Ghanaian forward Nathan Opoku on a three‑year contract following his release from Leicester City. The move comes after Opoku spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Newport County, where he made a significant impact.
Loan Success at Newport
During his spell at Newport, Opoku scored six goals in 16 starts, finishing the campaign as the club’s leading scorer. He praised the experience he gained in League Two, describing it as a “good spell” that has prepared him for the next step in his career.
Ready for League Two
Opoku said, “I know what League Two is all about. I had a good spell on loan at Newport last season and hopefully I can hit the ground running here.” He highlighted his versatility across the forward line, noting that his pace and ability to adapt to different attacking roles will be assets for Northampton.
He also mentioned his pre‑season involvement with Leicester’s first‑team squad, during which he scored a goal. Opoku stated that he is now fit and ready to play following his summer preparations.
The forward’s familiarity with the physical demands and competitive nature of League Two, gained during his time at Newport, is expected to reduce the adaptation period at Northampton.
