James Scanlon, a 19-year-old Gibraltarian winger, is set to join Arsenal from Manchester United as part of a double raid on the club's academy. The transfer, reportedly finalized by The Telegraph's Sam Dean, would see Scanlon join fellow academy product Habeeb Ogunneye, 20, in a move to bolster Arsenal's under-21 squad. Scanlon, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Swindon Town, scored once in six appearances for the League One side. The deal comes after Arsenal's interest in the Gibraltarian winger was confirmed earlier this month.
Scanlon, a product of Derby County's youth system, signed for Manchester United in 2023 before making his senior international debut for Gibraltar in March 2024. He has since earned 24 caps and scored five goals for his national team. His loan spell at Swindon, which began on January 31, saw him score a stunning goal against Oldham Athletic on his debut, curling the ball into the far corner. However, manager Ian Holloway expressed frustration with Scanlon's inconsistent performances, withdrawing him twice in late-season matches, including against Newport County.
The 19-year-old's loan at Swindon was part of a trio of January arrivals, alongside Jake Batty and Junior Hoilett. Despite initial promise, Scanlon failed to establish himself under Holloway, who criticized his lack of impact. 'He has to show me why he's here,' Holloway said in March, emphasizing the need for the young winger to prove his worth. Scanlon's potential move to Arsenal marks a significant step in his career, following his successful loan spell and international commitments.
The double raid on Manchester United's academy also includes right-back Habeeb Ogunneye, who played 21 times on loan at Newport County last season before being recalled in January. Both players were part of United's under-18 squad that won the Under-18 Premier League National title and Under-18 Premier League Cup in 2023/24. Their transfers signal Arsenal's ambition to strengthen their youth ranks ahead of the 2025/26 season.
