Jake Turner made his first start for Newport County and kept a clean sheet in the Jersey Mike's Trophy. Manager Tom Cleverley made wholesale changes to the side that beat Leyton Orient at the BetWright Stadium on Saturday, retaining only goalkeeper Jordan Wright from that victory.
Just Mathias Ross remained the sole link to the team that secured victory in East London. Caleb Roberts and Tegan Finn were among the players available to feature and start in the competition.
Hayden Mullins, who managed the side for the match, was pleased with the performance. "The group came together and performed well," Mullins said.
Mullins added that the team had pace, energy, creativity and athleticism, and were tight and compact defensively. The 2-0 win in their EFL Trophy opener provides a positive note as the club prepares for its next League Two fixture.
Newport County sit 15th in the table with 10 points from nine games, having won just one of their last five league matches. Their next match is a home fixture against 19th-placed Colchester on Saturday, 10 October. The club will hope to build on the momentum from the trophy win, where they scored both goals in the final 15 minutes of the match.
