Newport County Clinch Dramatic Survival, Send Barrow Down | S. MacDonald

Newport County dramatically secured their League Two survival on the final day of the season, scoring two late goals to defeat bottom side Barrow and condemn them to relegation. The Welsh club's 13-year stay in the Football League looked to be ending with 15 minutes left, as they trailed 1-0 and were in the drop zone based on other results.

Barrow, managed by ex-Newport player Sam Foley, started the match superbly, taking the lead in the ninth minute. Charlie McCann volleyed in after Rekeem Harper's cross was only half-cleared. The Cumbrians dominated the first half and missed several opportunities to extend their advantage.

Early in the second period, Newport County's Football League status remained precarious as Josh Gordon had a penalty saved by visiting goalkeeper Jordan Wright. The away side struggled to pose a threat of their own for much of the game, clinging on as Barrow pushed for a decisive second goal.

Eventually, Newport began to find their rhythm. Forward Bobby Kamwa rattled the crossbar with a thumping effort, signaling their intent. The equalizer came after a defensive mix-up saw Barrow goalkeeper Killian Barrett's clearance blocked by James Crole, who then set up substitute Tom Davies for a cool finish to level the score.

The dramatic turnaround was completed when Bobby Kamwa, who had been Newport's two-goal hero in their extraordinary 3-2 win over Oldham a week earlier, cut in from the left and fired a fine shot into the far corner. This late goal sparked wild celebrations among the estimated 1,000 Newport fans who had made the long journey to Cumbria, sealing their team's survival in League Two.

For Barrow, an improbable escape act required them to beat Newport and hope Crawley and Harrogate lost, alongside a huge swing in goal difference. Despite their strong start, the late collapse meant Barrow, who had been in League Two since 2020, were relegated, while Newport County, promoted in 2013, extended their stay.
