Newport County's leading goalscorer Shaquille Gwengwe will serve a three-match suspension for violent conduct. The Football Association confirmed the ban after reviewing video footage of an incident in the 66th minute of the 1-1 draw with York City on October 17, a match in which Kion Etete scored County's equaliser.

The club issued a statement on Tuesday. "Newport County can confirm that Shaquille Gwengwe will serve a three-match suspension following an unseen incident during our fixture against York," it said. Gwengwe accepted the charge, meaning the ban is effective immediately.

He will miss the upcoming away trip to Cheltenham Town on October 24 and the home clash with Chesterfield. The 25-year-old forward was also absent for yesterday's 2-2 draw at Rotherham United, a match in which Harrison Biggins and Gerard Garner scored for County.

Impact on County's season

Gwengwe's absence creates a significant void in County's attack. He has scored five goals in 10 League Two appearances this season, making him the club's top scorer. His contributions have been central to Newport's solid start, which sees them sitting 12th in the table with 15 points from 12 games, comprising three wins, six draws and three losses. The team is currently ten points behind the league leaders.

The team is currently on a five-match unbeaten run in the league, a sequence that includes four draws and one win from their last five outings. This resilience will be tested without their primary goal threat. The next challenge is a tough away fixture against fifth-placed Cheltenham on Saturday 24 October, a game where his finishing would have been vital.

County's immediate focus shifts entirely to preparing for that match at Whaddon Road. Manager Graham Coughlan must now find a solution to replace the goals of the summer signing, with the team having scored 16 and conceded 15 so far this campaign. The suspension means Gwengwe, who has been in strong recent form, will not be available for selection until after the Chesterfield fixture. His absence is a major blow for a side that has drawn its last four league matches, including the 2-2 result at Rotherham United where they twice came from behind to secure a point. County's recent form shows one win and four draws from their last five games.
