Newport County have signed Welsh striker Christian Doidge and re-signed defender Cameron Norman. Doidge, 33, joins as a free agent after being released by Forest Green Rovers.
What happened?
Newport County have brought in two key players to strengthen their squad. Norman returns for a second spell with the Exiles after leaving Tranmere Rovers in May.
Why it matters for Newport County
The signings come after Newport County finished 20th in England League Two with 43 points from 46 games, and a recent form of WWLWL. Their last result was a 2-1 win against Barrow on 2026-05-02.
What comes next?
Doidge follows fellow forward Yahya Bamba in moving from Forest Green to Newport. Newport County also signed Shaquille Gwengwe from Poole Town last week. | Stat | Value | | League standing | 20th in England League Two | | Points | 43 | | Recent form | WWLWL | | Last result | Barrow 1-2 Newport County (2026-05-02) |
Doidge had a successful stint with Forest Green, helping them win promotion to the EFL. He has also played for Bolton Wanderers, Hibernian, and Dagenham & Redbridge. Norman made 100 appearances during his first stint at Newport, where he was named player of the year in 2021-22 and 2022-23. He left the club for MK Dons in 2023 and has also had spells with Walsall, Oxford United, and Woking. Doidge returns to Wales having played for Cwmbran Celtic, Croesyceiliog, Barry Town, and Carmarthen Town in the early part of his senior career. His first English club was Dagenham & Redbridge, while he had a loan spell at Dartford before helping Forest Green win promotion to the EFL during his first stint with the Gloucestershire side. A brief spell at Bolton preceded Doidge's move to Hibernian, where his form led to suggestions that he could receive a Wales call-up, before he rejoined Forest Green in 2024. Newport County will be hoping these signings can help improve their League Two standing and push for a better finish next season.
